On February 10, 2014, Zoya Dmitrievna Katkova, a veteran of the China Department, senior researcher, Candidate of Historical Sciences, died of a serious illness at the age of 83.

Z. D. Katkova was born in Moscow on February 2, 1932 and came to sinology in a difficult way. In 1950. She entered the Chinese department of the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies, which was disbanded in 1954. After overcoming various bureaucratic obstacles, she managed to graduate from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) in 1955, but, like many Chinese colleagues, she was unable to get a job in the profession and from 1957 to 1971 had to translate from English at the Research Institute of School Education. Not abandoning her desire for science, Zoya Dmitrievna entered the graduate school of MGIMO and defended her PhD thesis there in 1972. In 1971, she joined the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences), where she worked for 43 years, showing herself to be a highly qualified sinologist, an authoritative expert in the foreign policy of republican China (1911-1949), and an active participant in the main sinological forum of the country - the annual conference "Society and State in China". As a result of her fruitful scientific activity, she published more than 60 scientific papers, including the monographs "The Foreign Policy of the Kuomintang government during the Anti-Japanese War (1937-1945)" (Moscow, 1978), " China and the Powers. 1927-1937 "(Moscow, 1995), " China-Japan: Love or Hate? On the problem of the evolution of socio-psychological and political stereotypes of mutual perception (VII century AD-30-40s of XX century)" (co-authored with Yu. V. Chudodeev) (Moscow, 1995; reprint: Moscow, 2001), "Diplomatic History of Republican China (1911-1949)" (deponent of INION RAS, 2011), as well as sections on China's foreign policy in 1912-1949 in the recently published 7th volume of the 10-volume History of China. The life and work of Z. D. Katkova are reflected in S. D. Miliband's biobibliographical dictionary (Orientalists of Russia. Book 1. Moscow, 2008, p. 609) and publications by Yu. V. Chudodeev and V. P. Zhuravleva in the " Archive of Russian Sinology "(vol. 2. Moscow, 2013, p. 446-451).

For many years, Zoya Dmitrievna has been continuously and selflessly performing the duties of scientific Secretary of the China Department, and in recent years has provided invaluable assistance to the Sinological Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2008 she participated in the State Prize-winning 6 - volume encyclopedia "Spiritual Culture of China", and in 2009 - in a major international project "Sinology-oral history". Her interview is posted on the website of the Institute of Internal Affairs of the Russian Academy of Sciences. With her high qualifications, hard work, kindness and at the same time demanding attitude towards herself and her colleagues, Z. D. Katkova has earned herself constant respect and love in the team.

The China Department, the Directorate and the entire staff of the Institute sincerely mourn the death of Zoya Dmitrievna Katkova and express their heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.
