On September 21, 2014, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Chief Researcher of the Center for Southeast Asia, Australia and Oceania Yulia Olegovna Levtonova suddenly passed away.

Russian science and Russian Oriental studies have lost an outstanding scientist. In terms of knowledge and understanding of the Philippines, we had no equal, and probably they will not appear soon.

Yulia Olegovna is a bright representative of the great Russian / Soviet school of Oriental studies, which gave our country a whole galaxy of scientists whose works are of lasting value.

Yu. O. Levtonova graduated from the History Department of Moscow State University in 1956 and in the same year began working at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences, now the Russian Academy of Sciences. Yulia Olegovna's entire scientific activity was connected with the Institute. In 1962, she trained at Cornell University (USA). In 1964, she defended her PhD thesis on the new history of the Philippines - " The Philippines during the collapse of the Spanish colonial Empire (60s of the XVIII century. 60s of the XIX century.)", and in 1988-her doctoral dissertation on the postcolonial political history of the Philippines " Problems of the postcolonial political development of the Philippines (1946-1986)". Before defending her doctoral thesis, Yulia Olegovna completed an internship at the Institute of National History of the Philippines in Manila (1987).

Yulia Olegovna headed the School of Filipino studies in the areas of political science (the experience of the Philippines as a model of liberal democracy in a non-Western society; the influence of traditional political culture on the modern political process; nation - building and modernization in the context of globalization; the problem of "power opposition"), history (the main vectors of historical development of the Philippines in the colonial and postcolonial periods, new approaches to analyze the historical process, taking into account modern achievements of domestic and foreign Oriental studies), to study the phenomenon of Philippine radicalism in a bi-confessional society (left-wing movements in Christian areas and the separatist movement of the Muslim national minority) in the context of the policy of strict state unitarianism and in the context of the influence of the current geopolitical and geo-economic situation in the regions of Southeast and East Asia.

Yulia Olegovna took part in the formation of new scientific developments and projects in the framework of Philippine studies and regional studies, in managing the scientific activities of the Center-organizing conferences, discussions, round tables, etc., provided scientific guidance on basic research on the history and political development of the Philippines and the Southeast Asian region as a whole.

Yu. O. Levtonova is the author of fundamental monographs, sections in the collective works of the Center and the Institute, responsible editor of a number of collective scientific works and numerous articles in scientific periodicals. She was the permanent editor and author of the Center's collection, now the magazine "Southeast Asia: Current Development Issues", and a regular contributor to the magazine"Vostok (Oriens)".

Yulia Olegovna is the author of such outstanding and diverse monographs as " Essays on the New History of the Philippines (60s of the XVIII-60s of the XIX century) "(Moscow, 1965), "Mabini-the National Hero of the Philippines" (Moscow, 1970), " History of Public Thought in the Philippines (the second half of the XIX century V.)" (Moscow, 1973), " History of the Philippines. A brief essay "(Moscow, 1979), "Evolution of the political system of the modern Philippines" (Moscow, 1985)," The Philippines and the USA: 200 Years of confrontation, compromises, Partnership "(Moscow, 1993, co-authored with O. G. Baryshnikova), " Interethnic relations in the countries of Southeast Asia: Cambodia. Thailand, Philippines " (Lambert Academic Publishing, 2013, co-authored with N. N. Bektimirova and I. N. Lipilina). In 2011 she published the monograph " History of the Philippines. XX century" is an outstanding fundamental study that summed up her scientific work.

We have lost a talented colleague, a warm, wise and sympathetic friend. Everyone who knew Yulia Olegovna could not help but admire her intelligence, beauty, grace, delicacy, and sincerity. She always had a kind word, and the strength to do good deeds and help her friends and colleagues.

This is also said about her:

Do not speak with longing: they are not there,

But with gratitude: there were.

FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES
