On October 20, 2012, Russian orientalists will celebrate the anniversary of Leonid Borisovich Alaev, then Editor-in-Chief of the journal Peoples of Asia and Africa/Vostok, and now Chief Researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It was through his efforts that the most interesting theoretical discussions were held on the pages of our magazine at that turbulent time and sometimes prophetic works were published about the then future, but now the modern world order. Leonid Borisovich was one of the organizers and editor of the fundamental six-volume "History of the East", the second volume of which" The East in the Middle Ages " under the editorship of the hero of the day and K. Z. Ashrafyan was published first (1995) and contained the most valuable theoretical chapters on the specifics of medieval Eastern society.
Many researchers have grown up on the books of Leonid Borisovich. Back in 1964, "South India. Socio-economic history of the XIV-XVIII centuries". A decade and a half later, "The social structure of the Indian village (Uttar Pradesh, XIX century)" (1976); " Rural community in Northern India. The main stages of evolution "(1981). A certain result of the study of the structure of the Indian rural community was summed up by the book "L. B. Alaev. The community in his life. The history of several scientific ideas in documents and materials". The breadth of theoretical analysis, thorough knowledge of sources, constant rechecking of their own conclusions, love for clarity of wording and harmony of presentation allowed them to enter the treasury of the Russian Oriental library. In recent years, Leonid Borisovich has written the best Russian textbook " History of India "(co-authored with A. A. Vigasin and A. L. Safronova, 2010) and the fundamental monograph " South India. Communal and political system of the VI-XIII centuries" (2011).
A special place in the work of Leonid Borisovich is occupied by the book "This is how I saw India" published in 1971, which included many " mind of cold observations / And hearts of sorrowful notes " about Indian life in the 1960s, which the hero of the day saw directly during a business trip to the country. Written in an excellent literary language and sometimes full of anecdotal stories about the different perceptions of the world of a second-time foreigner and local residents, the book revives the now-forgotten world of the era that preceded the onset of globalization.
The personality and scientific significance of Leonid Borisovich go far beyond indology - our hero of the day made an invaluable contribution to historical science, and not only to that part of it that calls itself Oriental studies. The thoughts and conclusions of Leonid Borisovich concerning the history of India allow us to evaluate and understand a lot in the general complex of problems and subjects that make up what we call world history.
We wish Leonid Borisovich new creative discoveries, long life and good health.
