May 20, 2008 marked the 75th anniversary of the chief researcher of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the History Department of the journal "Vostok (Oriens)", Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Vladimir Alexandrovich Tyurin.
Vladimir Alexandrovich hardly needs a special introduction: more than one generation of humanitarians has grown up on his numerous works, which have already become classics of Russian Oriental studies, and every visitor to the editorial office of the magazine "Vostok (Oriens)" invariably meets a warm welcome of an energetic and cheerful person of the deepest education, a true scientist, who in our age of extremely narrow specializations, can really be called an encyclopedist.
Vladimir Alexandrovich's research interests are diverse. The history of Indonesia, Malaysia and, more broadly, South-East Asia-and the history of his native country, Russia, dear to his heart. The ancient world, which Vladimir Alexandrovich gives life-long lectures about at the Eastern University and the Moscow University for the Humanities , and global problems of our time. The Aceh War - and the palace coups in Russia. Ibn Fadlan's journey to the Volga-and the culture of the Trobriand Islands. It is difficult to name a field of humanitarian knowledge about which it would be impossible to get the most detailed advice from Vladimir Alexandrovich immediately. And Vladimir Alexandrovich generously shares his fundamental knowledge with everyone: with friends, colleagues, students, students, authors of the magazine...
Orientalists are well aware of the classic works of the hero of the day: "The Conquest of Malaya by England "(Moscow, 1962), "The Aceh War" (Moscow, 1970), "Teuku Umar - the national Hero of Indonesia" (Moscow, 1971), "History of Malaysia" (Moscow, 1980). Most recently, Vladimir Alexandrovich's life-long work "History of Indonesia" (Moscow, 2004) and two monographs "History of Southeast Asia" (co-authored with D. V. Mosyakov, Moscow, 2004) and "History of Indonesia: XX Century" (co-authored with A. Yu. Drugov, Moscow, 2005). Now another generalizing monograph is in print - " History of Malaysia: XX century "(co-authored with V. A. Tsyganov). And Vladimir Alexandrovich does not stop there, he is distinguished by a rare curiosity in science and life, he searches for and finds new problems that have not been studied before, opens up new approaches to seemingly well-known facts.
Vladimir Alexandrovich combines scientific activity with teaching. He gives lectures on Russian history and the history of the countries of the East at the Eastern University, the Moscow University for the Humanities, and the Academy of National Economy. And how successful! His lectures organically combine conceptual harmony, richness of factual content with naturalness of presentation, naturalness that is comparable only to the poetry of the Russian classics beloved by the hero of the day. It is no exaggeration to say that Vladimir Alexandrovich is a favorite lecturer of several generations of students.
Vladimir Alexandrovich is an amazing person. His kindness, openness, benevolence, intelligence, cheerfulness like a magnet attract his colleagues and young people to him. Communication with him is an invaluable gift and a precious experience for everyone.
We cordially congratulate Vladimir Alexandrovich on his anniversary and wish him invincible health, long life, inexhaustible energy and new creative discoveries!
