April 2007 marks the 70th anniversary of Alexey Drugov , a well-known Indonesian scholar, Doctor of Political Sciences, Chief Researcher of the Department of Southeast Asia of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
A. Yu. Other was born on April 12, 1937 in Moscow. In 1954 he entered and in 1960 graduated from MGIMO of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1960-1961, he was an employee of the Committee of Youth Organizations. Then he worked as a military translator of the Indonesian language in Vladivostok (1961-1962) and in Indonesia (1962-1964). Alexey Yuryevich was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor for his work in Indonesia. In 1964-1965-lecturer at the Military Institute of Foreign Languages, in 1965-1991-employee of the International Department of the Central Committee of the CPSU. This period marked the beginning of his academic career, which focused on a deep and multifaceted study of the history and modern political life of Indonesia.
In 1969, A. Y. Drugov and A. B. Reznikov wrote the book "Indonesia in the Period of 'guided Democracy'", which was innovative both in terms of problems and research methods, in a certain sense a landmark for the subsequent development of domestic Indonesian studies, which defined a new direction in this branch of Oriental studies. After defending his dissertation "The political development of Indonesia in 1965 - 1971", devoted to the study of a complex, at that time poorly studied topic - the formation of the military-authoritarian regime of the "new order", A. Yu.Drugov was awarded the degree of Candidate of Historical Sciences. In 1973, his monograph "Indonesia after the events of 1965" was published.
The formula "for the first time in Russian science"is applicable to most of the numerous and diverse works of Alexey Yuryevich created in the 1980s. They are truly pioneering in nature, paving new paths in the study of the most complex and controversial issues and stories that are crucial for Indonesia at crucial stages in its post-colonial evolution. This includes the author's concept of the events of 1965, which is firmly established in Russian Indonesian studies, and a comparative analysis of Sukarno's" guided democracy "and Suharto's" new order " - their political and ideological specifics, typological differences, and a certain continuity of Sukarno's ideological and theoretical heritage adapted by the new regime. Drugov's monograph "Political Power and the Political System of Indonesia", published in 1989, completed a series of works on the political development of Southeast Asian countries, published by the Department of Southeast Asia. In it, the author, relying on the problem-historical method of research, also uses the tools of political analysis when it comes to interpreting the concepts of "political system", "political regime", historical-cultural and political-cultural problems.
Since 1991, A. Yu.has been working in the Department of South-East Asia. Over the past decade and a half, he has achieved a great deal in his scientific work, expanding the range of research interests, ideas and goals. His publications - monographs, chapters and sections in collective works, articles-trace the historical development of Indonesia in recent times up to the present day. The major monograph "History of Indonesia XX century" co-authored with V. A. Tyurin (2005) and a chapter on Indonesia in volume V of "History of the East" (2006) are devoted to historical topics. A special place in the scientific publications of A. Yu. Drugov is occupied by a series of articles in the collections of the Department of Southeast Asia " South-East Asia. Current issues

development", published annually since 1998. In them, he consistently reproduces and analyzes the changing realities in the socio-political life of Indonesia since the overthrow of the repressive Suharto regime in 1998, focusing on the most acute and topical problems of Indonesian reality, as well as some possible options for the country's further evolution, which are largely confirmed by political practice.
The long-term interest of the scientist in the political aspects of the development of Indonesia and in general in the political science direction in Oriental studies was realized in the talented fundamental monograph of A. Y. Drugov "Indonesia: political culture and political regime "(1997). This is the first study of political culture in Russian Indonesian studies in terms of its impact on the development of independent Indonesia from 1945 to 1997.The author highlights the problem of mutual influence of political regimes and political culture, exploring it from the post-war era to the "new order". In 1999, A. Yu. V. brilliantly defended his doctoral dissertation "Political culture and the political process in modern Indonesia" and became the first (and to this day the only) doctor of political Science in the department.
The political science approach is generally typical for the works of Alexey Yuryevich. His articles in the magazine "Oriens" - "Society and power in modern Indonesia" (No. 1, 2004) and earlier "Mass violence in Indonesia" (2000, No. 6) are extremely interesting. The latter examines an essentially universal phenomenon based on the specifics of the local political and cultural tradition. Drugov's political science research makes a serious contribution to the development of political science in our country. As for Indonesian studies, he can rightly be considered the founder of political science in this branch of Oriental studies.
Drugov has participated in many scientific conferences, symposia, and congresses: in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Tokyo, as well as international ones, such as the 35th Congress of Orientalists in Budapest (1997) and the 37th in Moscow (2004), where he made presentations.
The total volume of Alexey Yuryevich's publications exceeds 200 a. l.
Drugov is not only an author of academic research, but also a first-class publicist. He has written many articles in the national periodicals about the current political situation in Indonesia, geopolitics and international relations in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. These articles are rich in reliable information, contain original clearly formulated conclusions, and are written in a clear, accessible language for the general reader.
Since 1996, A. Y. Drugov has been teaching at the Eastern University. This is a new page in his professional activity, which revealed his outstanding pedagogical abilities. A. Yu. Drugov is a strict, demanding teacher, intolerant of dilettantism, who seeks to awaken a purposeful, professional interest in his future specialty among his students. One of the practical results of teaching activities is a textbook on the course " Indonesia. Regional Studies " (2005).
Alexey Drugov pays a lot of attention to working in the Society for Cooperation and Friendship with Indonesia, contributing to the development of relations between Indonesia and Russia.
Alexey Drugov as a scientist is distinguished by high professionalism and equally high demands on himself and his work, amazing hard work combined with a natural analytical mindset, purposefulness and scientific erudition. And yet - behind the strictly academic style of the scientist's work, one cannot help but feel a great knowledge of the country to which he devoted his life, love for its people, indifference and empathy with the difficulties and vicissitudes of fate that fell to his lot. And another thing: he is not only a great scientist, but also a well-educated, highly cultured person with a wide range of interests, who knows the history of Russia and its literature, especially poetry. With his appearance, it became more interesting to visit the department. Alexey Yuryevich is a charming, energetic person, at the same time reserved and democratic, intelligent, tactful-

it is mandatory. All these qualities arouse the sincere respect of his workmates for him.
Congratulating Alexey Yuryevich on his 70th birthday, we wish him new creative success and achievements, health and longevity.
