The most paradoxical phenomenon of our life is time. Sometimes it seems that it is standing still. However, in reality, it is rushing at a mind-boggling speed. It would seem that only yesterday we celebrated the 70th anniversary of Leonid Borisovich, prepared a collection in honor of the hero of the day, but did not have time to look back - a new anniversary is just around the corner. However, starting from the age of 70, the" quality of creative life " of a scientist doubles: anniversaries begin to be celebrated every five years. And in fact, there is something to celebrate!

In less than five years, L. B. Alaev published more than thirty-three scientific papers, of which he was the author or executive editor, and took part in at least ten national and international scientific conferences and round tables. Among his published works are a monograph on the history of medieval India, a university textbook on the history of the traditional East from ancient times to the beginning of the XX century, three volumes of Oriental History, in which Leonid Borisovich was the executive editor and deputy chairman of the editorial board, as well as numerous articles in scientific journals and collections, university program developments, conference abstracts, etc..

As always, one has to marvel at the breadth of L. B. Alaev's scientific interests. He is one of the rare professionals who optimally combine the qualities of a meticulous "applied scientist" and a high-level theorist.

Indeed, among the works of purely source studies are a commentary on the publication of Tamil inscriptions, a theoretical article in the fundamental collection on the theory and research methods of Eastern epigraphy, and an article on the significance of Indian medieval gift certificates as a resource for normative information.

L. B. Alaev's indological works analyze almost all periods of development of the subcontinent-from the early Middle Ages to the present - and in all aspects of this development - global, regional, historical, political, socio-economic, cultural. Here is a theoretical understanding of the development of India in the Middle Ages, and the historical dynamics of Indian civilization, and the problems of the Hindu-Muslim conflict, and the peculiarities of the political system and political culture of India, not to mention numerous publications in the Great Russian Encyclopedia, where Leonid Borisovich appears in two guises: author and scientific consultant.

In the works of general historical and methodological plan published over the past five years, L. B. Alaev continues to act as a major theorist and historian of science, primarily of Russian Oriental studies. Here, first of all, we should mention L. B. Alaev's responsible editing of two books of Volume IV "History of the East" and A. V. Korotaev's monograph "Social Evolution: Factors, Regularities, Trends", as well as such major theoretical works as the article on alternativeness and one-linearity in history (imaginary alternatives and cruel dead ends in the historical process). published in the journal "Philosophical Sciences"; a problematic article on Soviet Oriental studies as an object of historiographical research, containing a proposal to prepare an All-Russian conference of orientalists, which would summarize the development of this scientific discipline in the XX century.

And perhaps the most important thing that Leonid Borisovich Alaev has been doing not only for the last five years, but probably for most of his scientific life is working with students, undergraduates, and postgraduates. Leonid Borisovich gives them the most precious things that he has: his soul, erudition, and experience. The essential qualities of L. B. Alaev as a scientist are his passion, willingness to accept new ideas, and his own generosity to ideas and powers that he never tired of sharing with his students.

Here is a small confirmation of these words. One of the authors of this article was lucky enough to be the first graduate student of Leonid Borisovich. The entire period of work on the dissertation was a time of fruitful scientific communication between the teacher and the student. The process of free exchange of opinions brought pleasure to both sides. And it so happened that almost on the eve of the defense, when it was no more than five weeks away, the Higher Attestation Commission introduced a restriction on the list size of the submitted dissertation. It had to be shortened by 40 or more pages, and then given to the typist for reprint. The dissertator was in despair. He didn't have the time, energy, or skill to do all of this. In fact, it was necessary to cut on the live. And then the teacher came to the rescue, who for several days did this unbearable work for his student. The dissertation was defended on time.

We are sure that each of the "chicks" of Leonid Borisovich will have a lot of episodes and a lot of words to confirm his sincere gratitude to the teacher who generously shares his gift as a researcher with them.

Alaev's name is well known not only to indologists and theoretical historians, but also to almost all Russian Orientalists, regardless of their narrow professional affiliation. And not only because for many years he headed one of the main Oriental journals, Vostok, and remains a member of its editorial board. Leonid Borisovich is the permanent vice-president of the Society of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences almost from the first minutes of its reconstruction to the present, devoting a lot of effort to work in the organizational field.

In this synthesis of Alaev the scientist and Alaev the man, we should look for the reason for his youth. Time has no power over him. Communicating with Leonid Borisovich, you don't feel your age. There is no doubt that on October 20 of this year, the hero of the day will raise more than one glass in response to the congratulations of colleagues and students.
