May 20, 2003 marked the 70th anniversary of the famous Orientalist, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Vladimir Alexandrovich Tyurin, member of the editorial board of the journal "Vostok (Oriens)", head of the history department of the journal.
A man of complex and multi-faceted destiny, who devoted himself to the service of science, Vladimir Alexandrovich combines the best human qualities-openness, cheerfulness, exceptional kindness to people. His research abilities, broad scientific erudition, and tolerance for scientific opponents earned him the well-deserved respect of his colleagues-editorial staff and scientists. He is sincerely loved by representatives of the younger generation of aspiring researchers and students who learn from his rich experience and accumulated knowledge.
Vladimir Alexandrovich Tyurin was born in Moscow in a family of hereditary intellectuals. In 1955, he graduated from the History Department of Moscow State University. From 1955 to 1956, he was a researcher at the Institute of History, Language and Literature in Makhachkala. In 1961, he defended his PhD thesis on "The conquest of Malaya by England and the struggle of the Malay people for their independence", which was later published as a monograph. In 1960-1970, 1978-1984 V. A. Tyurin was a researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
In 1972, V. A. Tyurin was awarded the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences after defending his dissertation on the Aceh War, which became a fundamental study on the history of the national liberation movement in Indonesia.
From 1970 to 1977, V. A. Tyurin was a program specialist in the Department of Cultural Studies and Dissemination of UNESCO. Later, he worked for a long time in Paris.
Upon his return to Moscow in 1991. Vladimir Aleksandrovich was appointed a member of the editorial board and executive secretary of the magazine "Vostok (Oriens)", at the same time he headed the history department of the magazine. Thanks to his tireless efforts, the department gained its own face and became a leading editorial department.
Vladimir Aleksandrovich also did not stop his research activities. He is the chief employee of the IB RAS. A bright representative of the classical school of Russian Oriental studies, Vladimir Alexandrovich combines a deep knowledge of sources that is rare for our time, a broad scientific outlook, conscientiousness and objectivity. He never stops at what has been achieved and in the course of his scientific research often finds new approaches to the problems he studied years or even decades ago.
This is not limited to the creative activity of V. A. Tyurin. He is a lecturer in the history of Russia and the countries of the East at the Eastern University, established at the Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Vladimir Alexandrovich is the author of numerous works on the history of Southeast Asia, which represent the achievements of domestic Indonesian studies. Many specialists in Indonesia, as well as in other Southeast Asian countries, grew up on his monographs - " Teuku Umar-the national Hero of Indonesia "(Moscow, 1971), " Southeast Asia in World History "(co-author M., 1977), "History of Malaysia" (Moscow,1971). 1980) and others, including those devoted to the colonial period in the life of Malay-Indonesian society: "The policy of European powers in Southeast Asia (60s of the XVIII-60s of the XIX century." Sec.; Moscow, 1962), "The Aceh War" (Moscow, 1970), etc. Today, the main work of V. A. Tyurin's life "History of Indonesia" is being prepared for publication, in which the author reflects on the historical development of the country from ancient times to the present day.
