An untimely death snatched Nikolai Ivanovich Kalashnikov from our ranks. He was born on October 14, 1946 in Moscow in the family of a serviceman. In 1970, he graduated from the Faculty of History of the Lomonosov Moscow State University. Immediately after graduation, he worked as a research associate at the Institute for Social Research. Then he entered the postgraduate course of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where in 1976 he defended his thesis for the title of Candidate of Historical Sciences. Since 1975, he was a research associate and then a senior researcher in the Department of Southeast Asia, and later in the Department of Comparative Theoretical Studies.
His research included problems of political development and political culture, the specifics of democracy and authoritarianism in the East, as well as the evolution of the ruling elite and bureaucracy in a number of Southeast Asian countries: Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. He also paid close attention to the formation and activities of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Having fundamental knowledge, Nikolai Ivanovich devoted a lot of time and effort to his lecture work, which was always very successful.-

audiences that were personal in terms of audience composition were highly rated. His teaching career was also fruitful.
Everyone who knew Nikolai Ivanovich from working together appreciated his dedication to science, his passionate passion for the research process, and his demanding attitude to the results of his scientific work, which sometimes prompted him, under the influence of new factors, to review what he had already achieved and received recognition. He was well aware that the search in science never stops, and he constantly sought to move forward, consistently deepening the problems under consideration and expanding the range of countries studied. He was in the strict sense of the word a person of the scientific community, generously gave his knowledge to everyone around him, was very responsive, always ready to help. Nikolai Ivanovich's personal integrity, kindness, and conscientiousness were well-known, as was his ability to perform very labor-intensive public work without being noticed.
Death did not give Nikolai Ivanovich the opportunity to complete another study.
Together with his family, we mourn the passing of a talented scientist and outstanding person. The memory of him will remain in our hearts.
