On March 31, N. S. Tikhonov, Executive secretary of our magazine, turned 80 years old.
After graduating from the MGIMO Faculty of Oriental Studies in 1958, Nikolai Sergeevich worked for more than two years at the Institute of Sinology of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Among the important tasks that the young researcher of the Institute successfully completed was the preparation of a collection of studies on the national policy of the People's Republic of China in Tibet, Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang.
In 1960, after the closure of the Institute of Chinese Studies, N. S. Tikhonov moved to journalism at Gosteleradio, where he passed all the stages of a radio journalist (he was an editor, correspondent, commentator, columnist, executive secretary of the Editorial Office of broadcasting to China). As a correspondent, N. S. Tikhonov repeatedly went on business trips to the countries of East, South-East and South Asia: China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and India. In 1966, when the "cultural revolution" broke out in the People's Republic of China, N. S. Tikhonov visited Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou as part of a delegation of the Central Committee of the Komsomol, which was subjected to Red Guards ' provocations.
In 1976, Nikolai Sergeevich completed his work on the radio as Deputy Editor-in-chief of the Mir i Progress radio station. After moving to the Novosti Press Agency, he worked as an APN columnist on Chinese issues: his materials were published in the press of Japan, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Burma, Sri Lanka and other countries. In 1981-86, he worked in diplomatic and journalistic work in Malaysia, holding the posts of press attache, first secretary of the USSR Embassy and representative of the APN. N. S. Tikhonov organized, in particular, the translation and publication in Malay and Chinese of works by Russian authors. This experience was useful to him at the next important stage of his career, which began in 1988 - in the editorial office of the journal "Problems of the Far East".
For more than a quarter of a century, he has held the post of Executive Secretary of the PDV. His rich life experience, broad scientific and political outlook, taste for journalistic work, excellent personal qualities have a beneficial effect on all aspects of the life and work of the editorial board, at all stages of preparing the journal for publication. At the same time, he oversees the publication of the quarterly English-language version of the PDV, the magazine "Far Eastern Affairs". Among colleagues in the journal and at the Institute of the Far East, Nikolai Sergeevich enjoys great respect as a person of rare ability to work, high responsibility for his business.
For many years of work for the benefit of Russian Oriental studies, the development of editorial and publishing activities, N. S. Tikhonov was awarded Honorary Certificates of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of the Far East of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The PDV editorial board and editorial board congratulate Nikolay Sergeyevich on his anniversary and sincerely wish him health, happiness and new creative success for the benefit of the journal "Problems of the Far East", the Institute of the Far East and all Russian Oriental Studies.
