On June 15, 2012, Lev Nikolayevich Morev, a prominent Russian orientalist who worked for more than half a century at the Institute of Oriental Studies in the Department of Languages of the Peoples of Asia and Africa, passed away. He was an amazing person, sensitive, modest, decent, sympathetic. A great specialist in Thai and Lao languages, he had a truly encyclopedic knowledge of the history and culture of the peoples of East and Southeast Asia, which he generously shared with colleagues and young scientists.

Lev Nikolaevich was born on February 21, 1928 in Gorodok, Vitebsk region. In 1947, he entered the Chinese department of the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies. After graduating from the Institute, he was sent to the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs and sent to the USSR Embassy in Thailand as an intern. After returning from Thailand in October 1954, Lev Nikolayevich began teaching at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. In 1958, he completed postgraduate studies, and in 1959 he joined the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1963, he became a candidate, and in 1991-a doctor of philological sciences. In 1957, Lev Nikolayevich was accepted as a member of the CPSU and remained a true Communist until the last days of his life.

Lev Nikolayevich Morev made a significant contribution to the study of the languages of Southeast Asia, especially Lao and Thai, as well as the languages of small peoples of this region. His works, which are widely known among Russian and foreign scientists, combine a deep knowledge of the theory of general and Eastern linguistics, excellent command of the studied languages, encyclopedic knowledge of their structure, and a fine understanding of historical, cultural and religious factors of language development. His works include five dictionaries, five linguistic essays from the series "Languages of the Peoples of Asia and Africa"

and two fundamental monographs: on the syntax of the Thai language and on the comparative grammar of Thai languages. A monograph on the grammar of Thai languages is awaiting publication.

A great place in the work of L. N. Morev was occupied by teaching activities. For many years, he taught Thai and Lao languages at the ISAA of Moscow State University, at the Military University, at the Eastern Faculty of St. Petersburg.GU, at the Higher Courses of Foreign Languages at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. Lev Nikolayevich always showed a deep and sincere interest in the work of the department's staff and graduate students, as well as anyone who needed his qualified advice.

L. N. Morev conducted active scientific, organizational and public work. For almost 20 years (from 1987 to 2004), he was the head of the East and South-East Asian Languages Section of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He was a member of the Dissertation Scientific Council of the Institute of Philological Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, one of the leaders of the Society for Business and Cultural Cooperation between Russia and Laos.

Lev Nikolayevich Morev's work has received well-deserved recognition both in our country and abroad. In 1999, he was awarded an Honorary Diploma of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2004, the Ministry of Information and Culture of the Lao People's Republic awarded him a certificate of honor in connection with the publication of a joint Russian-Lao dictionary under his leadership. Lev Nikolayevich Morev's contribution to the development of friendly relations and scientific cooperation with Laos was awarded two more government awards of the Lao PDR-the Druzhba Medal (2000) and the Druzhba Order (2006).

For everyone who knew Lev Nikolaevich Morev, his passing is an irreparable loss. We no longer have a talented scientist, a good friend and helper in all our affairs. Lev Nikolayevich was a true patriot of his fatherland, tirelessly promoting the achievements of Russian science abroad. When he went on a research trip, he always took new publications from the department with him, and when he returned, he brought a pile of printed literature and photocopies that he made with his own hands for his colleagues. The memory of him will always warm our hearts.
