Gulsum Abdurakhimovna Galimova, an Iranian scholar and Turkologist, a bright, modest person, passed away on May 25, 2007. Gulsum Abdurakhimovna was born on January 14, 1928 in the village of Shatman-Tamak in the Miyakinsky district of Bashkiria to parents who spoke Tatar and Bashkir. Moving in 1933 to Tajikistan, a multilingual republic, Gulsum was formed as a polyglot, a capable person who mastered both the Tajik language and a number of Turkic languages. To these languages were added the knowledge of others that she had acquired at Leningrad University, where she entered the Iranian Department of the Oriental Faculty in 1946, and where Persian language and literature, as well as Arabic, became her lifelong hobby and specialty.
A rare combination of linguistic abilities and philological education determined her career as an Iranian linguist, literary critic, manuscript specialist, as well as a Turkologist-linguist.
After graduating from Leningrad State University, working in Tajikistan at the Institute of Oriental Studies (1953-1955), Gulsum participated in the preparation of the collective work "Catalog of Oriental Manuscripts of the Taj Academy of Sciences. SSR" (edited by A.M. Mirzoev and A. N. Boldyrev, in 4 volumes, 1960-1990).
The subsequent move to Moscow was connected with the admission in 1958 to the postgraduate course of the Institute of World Literature of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where she enthusiastically worked on the poetic heritage of the Tajik poet of the XIX century. Savdo and the Persian medieval poet Hafiz and their manuscript sources. The results of this work were a series of publications about the creative heritage of Tajik and Persian poets in scientific publications of Tajikistan in 1957-1958.
In 1963-1968, G. A. Galimova, as an employee of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences, took part in the compilation of the two-volume "Persian-Russian Dictionary" (edited by Yu.A. Rubinchik, published in 1971, 1983, 1985).

In the next period, which began with the transfer of G. A. Galimova to the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences, the main place in her work is occupied by editing linguistic works in the group of languages of the Institute (1968 - 1974). This area is becoming the dominant one in its activity, where the unique linguistic advantages of Gulsum (knowledge of about a dozen Eastern languages, perfect command of Russian) were fully in demand.
Then she continued to work in the same field, in linguistics, but already as the head of the department during 1975-1993 in the journal "Voprosy Yazykoznaniya". Leading the department for 18 years, G. A. Galimova worked closely with the authors, who greatly appreciated her professionalism and help. She has been working in the field of linguistics for more than 25 years. At the same time, Gulsum Galimova conducted new research in the field of Turkic languages, analyzed the trends and achievements of domestic Turkology, which is reflected in her regular reviews of scientific symposia that appeared on the pages of the journal "Voprosy Yazykoznaniya" during 1977-1993.
From 1996 until her death, G. A. Galimova taught Old Tatar (the Tatar literary language of the pre - national period) at the Moscow Higher Spiritual Islamic College (later transformed into the Moscow Islamic University-MIU). according to the program of teaching this language compiled jointly with Academician A. R. Tenishev. She was the supervisor of graduation papers of Muslim graduates, native speakers of different Turkic languages, and could explain herself in the languages of Bashkir, Kumyk, Balkar, Uzbek, Turkish, Kazakh, etc. She painstakingly taught her pets scientific work, instilled in them love and respect for the monuments of literature of the XII-XVIII centuries (N. Raghuzi, Haji Ahmed Yasevi, Kul Gali, etc.).
Gulsum was a very sociable, easy-going person who valued human friendship. She actively participated in meetings and general affairs of the team of fellow students of the Eastern Faculty of Leningrad State University in 1951. It was she (along with U.-J. Dondukov) who came up with the idea of creating "Memoirs of graduates of the Eastern Faculty of Leningrad (St. Petersburg) State University in the post-war years (1948-1952)" (St. Petersburg, 2001). Gulsum will remain in our memory as a person of rare kindness and love for people, animals, and birds. Its hospitality is widely known. Living in a communal apartment, she managed to receive guests who came to Moscow in a fair amount and provide everyone with an overnight stay. Gulsum was distinguished by her exceptional attention to friends and guests, inventing some delicious treats for them, and knew the preferences and tastes of people close to her. Gulsum was a cheerful person, loved practical jokes, fantasies, humor and laughter. He was a very gentle, attentive friend, a bright person, whose loss is very bitter for all of us.
