November 5, 2011 marks the 70th anniversary of our colleague and friend, a deep expert not only in the Middle East, but also in a wide range of problems of the world economy and politics, Deputy Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor V. Ya.Belokrenitsky.

Vyacheslav Yakovlevich was born in Kazan, where his family was evacuated from Moscow in the first months of the war. His parents worked for a long time in the system of the State Bank of the USSR, his father Yakov Mikhailovich Belokrenitsky published several works on banking and financial issues.

In 1959, after graduating from the first school in Moscow with a number of subjects taught in English, V. Ya. Belokrenitsky entered the Institute of Oriental Languages at Moscow State University (now ISAA MSU) and in 1965 graduated from the Institute of Oriental Languages with a degree in Indian history. After a year of working at TASS, he is enrolled in full-time postgraduate studies at the Institute of Asian Peoples of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences), where he conducts research on the economy of Pakistan. Upon its completion in 1969, he became a junior researcher, and since 1979 - a senior researcher at the Institute. 1974-1977 - Editor of the Karachi branch of the Press Agency Novosti (APN). From 1987 to the present, he has been Acting Head of the Middle East Department (since 2010 - the Center for the Study of BSV Countries).

In 1970, V. Ya. Belokrenitsky was awarded the degree of Candidate of Economic Sciences, in 1990-the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences; in 2003, he was awarded the academic title of professor. Until 1991, his main area of scientific specialization was the economy of developing countries on the example of Pakistan, the socio-economic and political history of this country. On this issue, he published a significant number of articles and books: "Small-scale production in the economy of Pakistan". Moscow, 1972, " Pakistan: features and problems of urbanization", Moscow, 1982, " Capitalism in Pakistan. History of socio-economic development", Moscow, 1988.

A small book published in mass circulation by Mysl Publishing house in 1981, written jointly with V. N. Moskalenko, is devoted to the socio-economic problems of Pakistan. An expanded edition of the monograph on Pakistani capitalism was published in India in 1991 in English.

Since the early 1990s, Belokrenitsky's research interests have shifted towards international relations and political science. In 1992, he taught these subjects as a visiting foreign professor at Villanova University (USA), and in 1993/1994 - at Hosei University in Tokyo. Since 1994, he has been teaching history and theory of international relations at the newly formed Eastern University (now the Institute of Oriental Countries).

Since 1996, Belokrenitsky has been working as a professor at the Department of Oriental Studies of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (University), where he teaches courses on the foreign policy of India and other South Asian countries, as well as on the role of the East in world politics, regional studies, problems of the modern Islamic world and Islamic radicalism, etc.

Teaching activities contribute to the preparation of a number of educational and methodical courses and manuals. In 1999 and 2001, the program of lectures "The East in International Relations and World Politics" was published, in 2009 the Eastern University issued a course of lectures under this title, and in 2010 the monograph "The East in World Political Processes" was published under the stamp of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.methodological complexes of MGI(U)MO, edited by Professor A. D. Voskresensky, writes articles for thematic collections and chapters of monographs prepared by the Department of Oriental Studies of MGIMO and a number of other departments of this higher educational institution.

As a specialist in international relations, Belokrenitsky focuses on the situation in South and Central Asia. A number of articles published, in particular, in the journals "Asian Survey", "Pakistan Horizon", "Pro et Contra", Central Asia and the Caucasus are devoted to these topics. In 1999, the collective monograph "South Asia: Conflicts and Geopolitics", prepared under his editorship and with his participation, was published, and in 2003, the book "South Asia in World Politics", written jointly with V. N. Moskalenko and T. L. Shaumyan. In addition to Pakistan's foreign policy, in these and a number of other works, V. Ya. Belokrenitsky analyzes aspects of India's foreign policy and Pakistan-Afghanistan relations, focusing in the latter case on the problem of Pashtun tribes and the presence of a common Pashtun area.

Since the late 1980s, V. Ya. Belokrenitsky's scientific and organizational activities have focused on the problems of Islam in the Near and Middle East. He inherited it from his teacher, Professor Yu. V. Gankovsky, who was the founder of the expanded Department of BSV countries, which included the Pakistan sector and the Kurdish studies sector. In 1999, the first conference on Islam and politics was held in a vast region that included, in addition to Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and ethnic Kurdistan, the countries of Central Asia and the Arab East. In 2001, the first collection of articles in the "green series" was published under the editorship of V. Ya. Belokrenitsky together with colleagues ("Islam and Politics", Moscow, 2001). It was followed by five more ("Muslim countries near the borders of the CIS" (Moscow, 2001); "Islam in the modern East" (Moscow, 2004); " Islam and social development at the beginning of the XXI century "(Moscow, 2005); "Russia and the Muslim world "(Moscow, 2010); " Islamic factor in History and Modernity "(Moscow, 2011)). These collections are based on reports delivered at large scientific conferences held regularly (every two years) with the participation of specialists from the Institute of Information Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, scientific and educational institutions in Moscow, other Russian cities and foreign countries.

Demographic processes in the East are another area of V. Ya. Belokrenitsky's research. It began with participation in the work of the interdepartmental group on demography, which in the late 1970s was created and headed at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences by Professor Ya. N.Guzevaty. In the post-Soviet period, V. Ya. Belokrenitsky focused not so much on economic aspects of demographic problems as on political ones. Several of his articles on world demography and world politics appear in the magazine" Oriens"and other publications. A special place in some of them is given to such a phenomenon as the explosive growth of the Muslim population of the planet.

The study of Pakistan from various points of view is constantly in the center of V. Ya. Belokrenitsky's attention. He devoted the largest number of 330 scientific and nonfiction works to this country. Many of them were written together with my friend and colleague Professor V. N. Moskalenko. In 2008, their joint monograph "History of Pakistan XX Century"was published in the series published by the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. According to the agreement signed by the authors with the largest Pakistani publishing house Oxford University Press, a revised and expanded edition of this book in English is being prepared.

V. Ya. Belokrenitsky participated in the work of the editorial board of the six-volume History of the East and was responsible editor (together with Professor V. V. Naumkin) of the sixth volume devoted to the modern period - 1945-2000, writing the final chapter and conclusion to it.

Colleagues and friends of Vyacheslav Yakovlevich in the year of his anniversary sincerely wish him good health and new achievements in the analytical field. The research activities and administrative and organizational work of Vyacheslav Yakovlevich deserve the highest praise. Undoubtedly, V. Ya. Belokrenitsky still has many publications of new scientific works ahead of him, which will bring considerable benefits to Russian Oriental studies.
