The Academy of Social Sciences of Australia was established in 1971. Prior to that, the role of the academy was carried out by the Council for the Study of the Social Sciences of Australia, established in 1942.Members of the Academy are scientists who have achieved high recognition in the world. The Academy is an independent non-governmental organization funded by private organizations and corporations, designed to conduct scientific research in various branches of the social sciences. The objectives of the Academy are: development of social sciences in Australia, improvement of the quality of scientific research, assistance and financial support for the publication of works on social sciences; creation of national associations or societies whose activities are aimed at the development of social sciences or any one of their branches; expansion of international cooperation of scientists, etc.
Members of the Academy advise various institutions on issues related to national needs and priorities related to the field of social sciences.
In addition to the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, there are three other academies - the Academy of Humanities, the Academy of Science and Technology and the Academy of Engineering and Technical Sciences. Since 1995, all these academies have been cooperating with each other through the Forum, which organizes the activities of all academies and is a center that supports the academies ' links with other organizations. The Forum helps to resolve various problems that arise between representatives of the humanities and non-humanities.
The Academy of Social Sciences has 362 full members, including honorary and foreign ones. They are selected by a special commission consisting of prominent scientists who have made significant contributions to one or more social science disciplines.
The Academy is managed by the President, Vice-President, Executive Director, and Honorary Treasurer. The Academy's structural divisions are: the secretariat and committees - executive, Standing Committee of performers, Finance, membership, international relations, seminars, public relations, research projects. Full members of the Academy work in the following section commissions: Section A-anthropology, demography, geography, linguistics, sociology; Section B-accounting, economics, economic history, statistics; section C-history, law, philosophy, political science; Section D-education, psychology, social medicine.
The Academy's scientists carry out their activities within the framework of various international programs. Their goal is to develop international cooperation, scientific exchanges of Australian sociologists with foreign partners, and participation in the work of international organizations on social sciences. Contacts with foreign scientists, including participation in international conferences, contribute to improving mutual understanding between different states, and above all, the countries of the region. International programs include funding for international relations with similar national institutions in other countries. Currently, these are scientific exchange programs with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the National Center for Social Sciences and Humanities of Vietnam (this program, which began in 1992, provides for one trip of a Vietnamese scientist to Australia and financially supports the stay of Australian scientists in Vietnam), the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
The programs also provide for non-funded agreements with national institutions close in scientific areas; membership in international and regional organizations.-

support and cooperation (sometimes on a financial basis) with national and regional branches of international organizations.
Cooperation agreements were signed with the Academy of Finland (1991), the Academy of Lithuania (1994), the Sinica Academy in Taiwan (1994), three scientific organizations in Chile (1995), the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters (1995), the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (1995), and the Polish Academy of Sciences (1996Korea Council of Social Sciences and Research (1997), Czech Academy of Sciences (2000), Philippine Council of Social Sciences (1998), Conference of German Academies (1999). These agreements facilitate mutual visits of social scientists and the exchange of publications and information.
Australia's membership in international and regional organizations allows representatives of the Academy to interact with scientists from other countries. For example, the Association of Asian Social Science Research Councils includes 16 countries in the region, in which Australia occupies one of the leading positions.
The Australian Academy of Social Sciences is also a member of the Pacific Science Association.
