On June 25, 2016, Vadim Ivanovich Shabalin turned 85 years old.
A well-known Russian sinologist, Doctor of Economics, diplomat with the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, chief researcher of the Institute of the Far East of the Russian Academy of Sciences and one of the "founding fathers" of the Institute of the Far East of the Russian Academy of Sciences-he passed a glorious labor path, and his biography in terms of coverage of events and geography of
After graduating from the Faculty of Economics of the Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1954, Vadim Ivanovich defended his PhD thesis in 1959 and his doctoral thesis in 1976. The main focus of his deep and original research was the socio-economic policy of the People's Republic of China, and the result was 11 monographs and more than 60 scientific articles, participation in major international forums on the world economy in different countries. Moreover, Vadim Ivanovich combines fruitful scientific work with an exceptional talent as an editor: it is difficult to list monographs, collections of scientific papers and articles in which V. I. Shabalin acted as a scientific or executive editor.
Never abandoning his scientific career, V. I. Shabalin successfully combined it with practical activities throughout his rich work biography. Here are just the main stages of the great journey of the hero of the day. In the diplomatic field, V. I. Shabalin represented our country in China, the Republic of the Philippines, and the Union of Myanmar. He spent many years working in the international departments of the Central Committee of the CPSU, headed the Department of Inter-Parliamentary Relations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, and taught at Moscow State University. And more than once, by the will of fate, he found himself in the midst of dramatic events: the siege of the Soviet embassy during the" cultural revolution "in China, the coup d'etat in Manila (in fact, the first" color revolution " in the world), the presence in the besieged White House in Moscow in October 1993...
Rich life experience and undoubted literary gift, a variety of creative interests allowed Vadim Ivanovich to create and publish many journalistic and artistic essays, several monographs, in particular the book of memoirs " Tomorrow will blow tomorrow's wind... Reflections on Time "(2011) and " About Time and about Yourself "(2008), which was warmly reviewed by academician M. L. Titarenko:
"I would call this book a lyrical image of history in the eyes of a diplomat, public figure and scientist. At the same time, it is a living family history... The story is quite dramatic and tragic. The book is written in the best traditions of memoir literature-
tours and is of great value... because many events are colored by the personal impressions and views of the participant, an attentive analyst. This is a very valuable work, as it contains assessments of a person who has made a great contribution to the development of Russian-Chinese relations. This is a wise book about our diplomacy, public policy, and Sinology."
A special place in Vadim Ivanovich's activities is occupied by his "small Homeland": he often meets with fellow countrymen - residents of the Kirov region (the place where he was born, where he spent his childhood, where his ancestors lived - Vyatka peasants) - intellectuals, teachers and students, cooperates with local museums, helps in publishing local lore literature, publishes his own essays in the local press. "Without the rise of the province, Russia will not get back on its feet," Vadim Ivanovich is convinced.
A veteran of three organizations - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Rocket and Space Agency-V. I. Shabalin was awarded three Orders of the USSR and eight medals, honorary badges and medals of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, COMECON, RAS, ORKD, Rocket and Space Agency, border troops. The total length of service of Vadim Ivanovich is more than 60 years. He is surrounded by a wonderful family: his wife Nadezhda Grigorievna is a professor and lecturer in political economy at the university, his daughter Olga is a candidate of Economic sciences, his son Sergey is an international economist, three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is still full of creative ideas, continues active research and editorial activities, prepares new publications, in particular in the "Collections of Memoirs of veterans of the diplomatic Service" of the Russian Foreign Ministry, and shares his rich experience with colleagues.
The management and staff of IDV RAS, the editorial board and editorial board of the journal" Problems of the Far East " warmly congratulate the hero of the day and sincerely wish Vadim Ivanovich Shabalin - a scientist, diplomat, patriot of Russia and a wonderful person - health and many years of joyful creativity in the circle of relatives, friends and colleagues.
