H. M. Turinskaya, Rec. na: Kul'tura i byt austroneziyskikh narodov (Istoriya kollektsii i ikh sobateli) [Culture and Life of Austronesian Peoples(History of collectionsand their Collectors)], Collection of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, vol. LIII, ed. by P. L. Belkov and E. V. Revunenkova, St. Petersburg: Nauka Publ., 2007, 368 p.
The 53rd volume of the Collection of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography has been published. Peter the Great (Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences "Culture and life of Austronesian peoples", which continues the series of publications devoted to the peoples of the Pacific region, and a number of thematic publications on various museum and scientific issues (for example, Culture of Peoples 1995; Museum Collections 2004). The MAE collection has been published since 1900 and from the very moment of its foundation has been aimed at getting acquainted with scientific research conducted in the Kunstkamera, one of the largest ethnographic museums and research centers in our country, and introducing museum collections and materials to scientific circulation. The reviewed volume was prepared by the MAE and other scientific and museum institutions of Russia. Of great importance is the fact that the museum's collections are available for the work of specialists representing various research centers and developing problems of the cultural history of the peoples of the world in connection with museum collections.
The materials of the collection are divided into three thematic blocks. The first section contains research on the history of MAHE's Oceanic collections. The article by L. A. Ivanova contains materials for the biography of the first scientific curator of the MAHE, the museologist F. K. Russov (1828-1906), who compiled museum documentation and conducted extensive source work with the museum's collections, including oceanic ones, as evidenced by the data provided in the article from the archives of St. Petersburg. I. K. Fedorova's article is devoted to the problem of identifying objects from the early Oceanic collections of the MAE, which examines the ethnographic heritage of I. K. Gorner, a participant in the first Russian round - the-world expedition (1803-1806).
A. A. Lebedeva's work "Models of Oceanic canoes in the collections of the MAHE and the Central Naval Museum" is an experience of applying to the collections of such specific museum objects and ethnographic sources as models. The article describes the following models:
Hristina Turinskaya-Candidate of Historical Sciences, Senior Researcher of the Ethnographic Cabinet-Museum of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences; e-mail: museum@iea.ras.ru; tu_christy@mail.ru
oceanic seaworthy vehicles stored in these museums, as well as an essay on the history of canoe use in Oceania. Marine vessels and their models are considered as a source for studying the culture of shipbuilding and navigation among the peoples of the region. The author rightly believes that the study of the history of the formation of museum collections, identification of errors, inaccuracies and inconsistencies in documentation, attraction and comparative study of similar collections of domestic and foreign museums help in attribution and reattribution of objects from the collections of MAE.
In the article by P. L. Belkov devoted to Oceanic objects from the collection of L. S. Vaksel (17767-1816), the fate of individual museum objects is considered in the context of the history of the MAHE scientific collections. When establishing the identity of museum objects, the author calls for taking into account the history of registration of collections, taking into account the peculiarities and imperfections of registration documents related to early arrivals to the museum's funds. P. L. Belkov's idea of leaving "free space for further interpretations (additions and changes)" in the course of attribution and establishing a "unified picture of the world of early arrivals" of the MAE is interesting (pp. 98-99).
S. A. Korsun's article analyzes the problem of attribution of objects from old and collected collections of the MAE in the Pacific region based on the study of museum labels and other documentation. At the same time, the author reveals the connection of the history of the MAHE collections with the history of other museums, the processes of their reorganization, transfers and exchanges of collections between museums.
The second section of the collection is devoted to the old and new collections of the MAE in Indonesia, the Philippines and Oceania. E. V. Revunenkova ("Models of Karo Batak houses in the MAE collection") continues a series of publications about Batak cultural and everyday objects from the museum's collections. The author complements the review of the collection of models of houses and other buildings with a detailed description of the construction processes and a general outline of the history of traditional Karo Batak dwellings and settlements in the past and present, noting their close connection with the economic system, social organization, kinship system and religious beliefs of the people.
The lists of objects from the collections of K. Maschmeyer, G. Meissner, and A. Grubauer presented in V. N. Kislyakov's article (received in the late 19th and early 20th centuries) serve as materials for the history of acquisition of the museum's Indonesian collection and are a continuation of the series of publications of collection lists in the collections of the MAE (Soboleva 1995).
The study by M. V. Stanyukovich presents new receipts for the peoples of the Philippines to the MAE funds, describes the collection criteria and composition of collections N 7161 and N 7315, which were selected by the author of the article in 1995 and 2006 during field work in the region and were transferred to the museum in 1997 and 2006. They reflect various ethnographic themes, peoples and localities, some of which are poorly or not represented at all in the MAE funds. The description of the newly received collections is accompanied by an essay on the Philippine collections of the Kunstkamera, as well as information on the ethnography of the Philippines and information about the existence of objects of interest to the collector in the modern culture of the studied peoples. The author draws attention to the problem of determining the ethnicity of an object that is relevant in ethnographic museology. Of great importance is the selection of clothing collections practiced by modern museum collectors in combination with other types of sources - video, audio, photographic materials, and literature.
The article by L. A. Ivanova is devoted to the creative biography of the Polynesian artist Aloy Pilioko (b.1935), who is a participant in a number of exhibitions of Oceanic collections and a donor of the MAE. Artists and collectors citizens of France and Vanuatu Nikolai Mishutushkin and Aloy Pilioko in 1994, after the temporary exhibition "Vanuatu in the Mirror of Art" organized by the MAE RAS, transferred the collection on Oceanic culture to the museum's funds. In the article, the description of the life and work of A. Pilioko is supplemented by an essay on the culture of the indigenous population of the Polynesian island of Uvea (Wallis) - the artist's homeland.
It seems appropriate to add in this connection that N. N. Mishutushkin and A. Pilioko-remarkable collectors, connoisseurs of culture and art of the peoples of Oceania-played an important role in the history of ethnographic museum business in Moscow. It was the Oceanic collection they donated that became the basis for the Ethnographic Museum of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which was established in 1991 and is currently the only specialized ethnographic museum operating in the Russian capital (Kalinovskaya and Turinskaya 2004: 52).
The third section of the collection includes publications of archival and museum materials. T. K. Shafranovskaya's research is devoted to the collections of Russian scientists of the XVIII century. The author traces the direct connection between private and museum collecting, analyzes the role of personal collections of scientists in their scientific activities. Thus, the private collection acts both as the basis and as the result of the researcher's work.
A. A. Lebedeva's publication "Materials and documents stored in the Department of Australia, Oceania and Indonesia" provides information on the organization of the department's work, which is necessary for specialists studying the MAE collections and the history of their formation.
The collection ends with an article by Xiu. Kurnosova, A. L. Larionov, and E. S. Soboleva on the history of the collections of the State Admiralty Department Museum and the Central Museum of Fine Arts. Special attention is paid to ethnographic objects brought from the Pacific region by sailors who participated in Russian expeditions in the first half of the XIX century and replenished the collections of Russian naval institutions and museums. Many of these items were later transferred to the MAHE. The documents used by the authors provide information on the history of the formation of collections of museums of various profiles.
In conclusion, it should be noted that among the ideas that permeate the materials of the collection, the main place is occupied by the problem of attribution of museum objects and restoration of the original composition of old MAHE collections. Attraction of data from national and foreign museums, archives, and abundant references to literature significantly enrich the collection's articles. Little-known materials are introduced into wide scientific circulation, and the museum and scientific value of objects from the collections of MAHE and other museums is revealed. The authors work in the direction of a thorough study of museum collections, documentation, illustrative materials, and other diverse sources in order to establish the composition of collections from early arrivals to the museum, identify and attribute museum items, and resolve controversial attribution issues.
It is impossible to disagree with the statement made by the editors of the volume about the importance of expedition research for ethnographic museology, the study of cultural dynamics and attribution of ancient museum collections. The appeal of museologists to scientific biographies of collectors and museum figures in the context of studying the history of museum collections is justified.
Numerous illustrations of good quality not only adorn the publication and contribute to a more complete perception of the texts of articles, but also represent a valuable source for research and museum work. Technical shortcomings include the absence of a list of abbreviations in the collection.
The materials of the publication demonstrate the ongoing museum practical and museum-related theoretical work that is being conducted at the MAE. The reviewed volume adequately continues the traditions of publishing collections of the MAE, serves as a fundamental tool for studying the culture of the peoples of the world, the history of science and museum business.
