August 28, 2011 marks the 80th anniversary of Yuri Vladimirovich Chudodeev, a leading researcher in the China Department of the Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Candidate of Historical Sciences.
Yuri Vladimirovich is a native Muscovite, born in the Chistye Prudy district in the family of an employee. His passion for history during his school years determined the choice of an educational institution after graduating from high school - the History Department of Moscow State University, where he was accepted in 1949 to the eastern department formed there, where he began to study Chinese history. A significant interest in the study of China - a direction that later became the main one in his scientific career - not least, as Yuri Vladimirovich admitted in subsequent years, was associated with the development of the revolutionary process in this country and the formation of the People's Republic of China in 1949. A turning point in his life was in 1958, when he was accepted into the graduate school of the Institute of Chinese Studies established in those years, which since 1962 has joined the Institute of Oriental Studies, where Yu. V. Chudodeev still works.
In 1964, he made his first trip to China - a six-month research internship at the History Department of Peking University.
In 1965, Yuri Vladimirovich successfully defended his PhD thesis "The Constitutional movement of the liberal bourgeois-landlord opposition on the eve of the Xinhai Revolution in China", in which he proposed a new assessment of the development of the political situation in China on the eve of 1911 and the role of the Shenshi-bureaucratic opposition in the development of the pre-Xinhai crisis.
In the following years, Yu. V. Chudodeev repeatedly visited China, consulting with Chinese scientists and participating in various Russian-Chinese scientific forums.
Yu. V. Chudodeev is a sinologist, an authoritative expert on the history of China in modern and contemporary times, relations between the USSR and Russia with China, and the political situation in the Asia-Pacific region. During his half-century of fruitful scientific activity, he wrote and published many works, including the monographs "On the Eve of the Revolution of 1911 in China", "Before the eyes of changing China", and a collection of articles " Russia-China: strategic partnership at the present stage-problems and prospects", as well as in collaboration with Z. D. Katkova " China-Japan: Love or Hate? On the problem of the evolution of socio-psychological and political stereotypes of mutual perception (VII century AD - 30 - 40-Yu. V. Chudodeev and his colleague were among the first in Russian Sinology to develop stories related to the problems of ethnopsychology.
At the initiative of Yu. V. Chudodeyev, the testimonies of many Soviet advisers and volunteers who helped the national liberation struggle of the Chinese people in the 1920s and 1940s were collected and published. As a result of his painstaking work, eight collections of memoirs of prominent Soviet military leaders who fought in China in those years, helping to develop the Chinese revolution and repel Japanese aggression were published.
Yuri Vladimirovich is an active participant in dozens of scientific congresses and conferences, symposiums and seminars. His high qualifications, professionalism, creative energy, caring attitude, attention to colleagues, directness and openness earned him respect in the team.
In 1996 - 2007 Yu. V. Chudodeev worked as the head of the Scientific and Publishing Department of the Institute, created on his initiative. Thanks to the energy of Yuri Vladimirovich, hundreds of scientific works of our employees, which had been waiting for their turn for publication for years, were published. Over the years, more than 300 titles of books have been published under the own brand of the Institute of Information Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the circulation of which is successfully implemented through the efforts of Yu.V. Chudodeev.
Since March 2007, Yu. V. Chudodeev continued his research work in the China Department. During this time, he wrote and published a number of articles about the problems and prospects of the Russian-Chinese strategic partnership, the internal situation and stability of China, the problems of peaceful reunification of the PRC with Taiwan, the Eurasian identity of Russia, China's overcoming the global financial and economic crisis, etc.
In 2009, Yu. V. Chudodeev took part in a major international project "Sinology - Oral History". Currently, he is involved in writing the" History of China "in ten volumes (the head of the publication is Academician S. L. Tikhvinsky), working on the monograph "The Collapse of the Monarchy in China". In addition, Yu.V. Chudodeev serves as the scientific secretary of the book series "History of the Countries of the East in the XX Century" published by the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and also continues to provide the most active assistance in the work of the Scientific and Publishing Department of the Institute.
Yuri Vladimirovich managed to pass on his love for China to his heirs, as several younger generations of his family have been successfully studying China for a long time.
Celebrating the 80th anniversary of Yu. V. Chudodeyev, the directorate, the entire staff of the Institute and the editorial board of the magazine "Vostok (Oriens)" cordially congratulate him and wish him health, "seas of joy, mountains of longevity" and fruitful creative work in the field of Oriental studies.
