The Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Philosophy and Higher Education suffered a heavy loss. On November 28, 2008, Honored Scientist of Mongolia, major expert on the history of Buddhist philosophy, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Mongolia, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Luvsantseren Gelegjamtsyn died.
G. Luvsantseren was born in 1935 in the Ulaanbadrah somon of the East Gobi aimag. In 1956 he graduated from the Faculty of Philology of the Mongolian State University (MonSU), in 1979 he defended his PhD, in 2002 - his doctoral dissertation, in 2005 he was awarded the title of Honored Scientist of Mongolia, in 2006 he was elected an academician of the Academy of Sciences of Mongolia.
G. Luvsantseren started his career as a teacher of philosophy at MonSU (1956-1963), worked as a responsible employee in the Central Committee of the MPRP (1963-1969), representative of Mongolia in the World Committee of Democratic Youth in Hungary (1969-1973) , from 1973 to 2008 - head of the sector, scientific secretary of the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Law Academy of Sciences of Mongolia. From 1986 to 1998, he was the General Secretary of the Asian Buddhist World Conference.
G. Luvsantseren wrote the fundamental work "Theoretical Foundations of Madhyamika Philosophy", monographs" Nagarjuna's Philosophical Views " and other books, pamphlets, more than a hundred scientific articles and reports. Luvsanceren initiated the publication of the series of sources on Buddhology "Monumenta Buddhica" and published their first five volumes, which were the result of his creative, painstaking work.
In his works, he deeply explored the works of prominent representatives of Buddhist philosophy and logic, such as Nagarjuna, Aryadeva, Asangi, Vasubadhu, Dignagi, etc., showing their influence on the development of Mongolian philosophy.G. Luvsantseren drew attention to the original nature of many works of Mongolian thinkers. Without falling into callous nationalism, he rightly pointed out their independent approach to interpreting the provisions of the Madhyamika Buddhist school, their desire to reform them in relation to the level of public consciousness in Mongolian society (we are talking about the interpretation of the universal principle of shunyat and understanding the world as an integral phenomenon). G. Luvsanceren has always focused on theoretical and methodological problems. In his opinion, Mongolian thinkers considered such a direction of the madhyamika school as prasangika to be the highest manifestation of the mind. In the works of G. Luvsanceren, the problem of correlation of absolute and relative truths in this school is also considered. The theoretical and methodological developments of Madhyamika philosophy research put forward by G. Luvsantseren served as the basis for the creation of a school of Buddhology in Mongolia.
An important place in the scientific activity of G. Luvsanceren is occupied by his cooperation with Soviet and Russian scientists. Together with the founder of the study of the history of Mongolian philosophy and socio-political thought, Professor Ch. As a jourdeur, he was at the origin of the joint research project of the two countries "Anthology of Mongolian Thought". G. Luvsantseren took part in the development of the concept of this project, determining the list of thinkers, and selecting works. The anthology chronologically covers the entire history of Mongolia's spiritual development, starting with the first representatives of primitive, methodological consciousness and ending with the developed and crucial Buddhist systems of thought. And this is an indisputable merit of Mr. Luvsanceren. He has repeatedly visited the Soviet Union and Russia, participated in joint scientific forums, organized them more than once, and had many friends among his Russian colleagues, among whom he always enjoyed high scientific authority.
G. Luvsantseren has made a significant contribution to the development of higher education in Mongolia. For many years, he taught courses in philosophy at the Mongolian State University. Under his leadership, more than 20 doctoral and PhD theses were defended.
The Mongolian state highly appreciated his achievements in the development of science and education - he was awarded the title of Honored Scientist of Mongolia, awarded the Order of the Polar Star, the Medal of Honor of Labor, etc.
In the memory of those who were lucky enough to communicate with him, Luvsantseren Gelegjamtsyn will remain a cheerful, kind, charming, sensitive and attentive person, always ready to help people of science. Honesty and integrity were his life principles.
