On October 7-8, 2015, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences hosted the conference "Shame and Pride", the fifth conference of the interdisciplinary project group "Under the Sky of South Asia" (PNUA-5), organized by the interdisciplinary project group "Under the Sky of South Asia"1 and the Center for Indian Studies of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The theme of the conference was formulated as "Shame and pride", i.e. the title included two randomly selected hyponyms from a variety of concepts denoting various emotions, feelings and moods. Turning to the topic of emotions and affects introduced PNUA to the sphere of the current direction of modern humanities, known as the"Emotional/Affective Turn". Studying the emotional sphere of societies and individuals using methodologies developed in various disciplines, researchers agree that for all their spontaneity, subjectivity and individuality, emotions, their content, verbal and nonverbal ways of expression and fixation are largely formed by society, culture and historical environment, while actively influencing certain aspects of life. manifestations of social life.
The emotional mood of the conference was set by the presentation of the book " Under the sky of South Asia. Territory and Belonging: the Mobility Paradigm and the Search for Meaning beyond Static " (project leader I. P. Glushkova, executive editor of the volume S. E. Sidorova), published by Nauka Vostochnaya Literatura publishing house on the eve of the conference. This 911-page folio is the second volume of the PNUA project, based on the materials of the second conference of the project ("Movement and Space", October 10-11, 2012). It follows the volume " Under the sky of South Asia. Portrait and Sculpture: visualization of territories, ideologies and ethnic groups through material objects" (project manager I. P. Glushkova, executive editor I. T. Prokofiev, Moscow: Vostochnaya Literatura, 2014, 607 p.).

The reports presented at the conference were divided into four thematic blocks. The first "Ecstasies and Sufferings of Religiosity" was devoted to the emotional aspects of various religious movements. The general theoretical report of A. S. Astakhova (RANEPA) "The problem of defining theoretical optics in the study of religious emotions (approaches to Hinduism)" was followed by presentations on religious specifics. Two of them concerned South India of the late Antiquity and early Middle Ages: N. V. Gordiychuk (Fed. Institute of Mediation) "Body and Emotions in Early Tamil Literature" and O. P. Vecherina (Fed. M. B. Demchenko (Russian Orthodox University named after St. John the Theologian) in his report "The category of sadness in the mystical and philosophical poetry of Srichandra (XVI century)" addressed the Punjabi religious community of Udasi ("pechalnikov"), accompanied by deep sadness ascetic departure from the world. K. A. Demichev (Un-t Ros. acad. In his report "Pride of the Undefeated: the emotional component of the Khalsa military ideology", he analyzed the formation of feelings in the Sikh environment that correspond to the religious liberation mission of the community. I. P. Glushkova (IB RAS) chose the theme " Disgust (kilas). The excreto-indignant metaphor of Marathi websites." She described how medieval Marathi mystics helped themselves and their audience reject the flesh and everything connected with it for the sake of spiritual union with God.
V. S. Firsova (Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg) devoted her report "Nostalgia as an emotion among migrants from South Asia in Japan" to the feelings of natives of India in relation to the old and new homeland. T. V. Kardumyan and I. B. Spector (ISAA MSU) in their report "Visualizing anger among students: Poster art at JNU (Delhi)" showed how posters and graffiti on the campus of the famous Indian University reflect the political emotions of students. R. E. Prokhorov (IB RAS) analyzed the influence of the psychological state of society on Pakistan's foreign policy. A.V. Bochkovskaya (ISAA MSU) reported in the report "Institutionalization of feelings: definition of the "happiness index" in Bhutan"about how a small Himalayan kingdom uses modern mathematical and statistical methods to construct a positive attitude of the people to the country, power and their own existence.
The third thematic block "Paroxysms of admiration and disappointment" was opened by the report of Yu. G. Atmanova (independent researcher) "The dynastic pride of the Mughals and the forms of its manifestation in the field of visual propaganda", in which the formation of an imperial identity among the elite and a sense of superiority over the elites of neighboring empires with India were considered on the material of Mughal painting. K. A. Demichev's report "The palette of emotions of the Punjabi Lion in the reflection of European records and official court chronicles" focused on the founder of the independent Sikh state in Punjab, Ranjit Singh. Three reports were devoted to the problem of perception of India by "others". A. A. Kozlov (ISAA MSU) in the report " Passing through Delhi. The delight and sadness of 19th-century European travelers "analyzed the feelings of British and Americans who visited the Mughal capital in the second half of the 19th century-admiration for the majestic ruins, grief for the luxury that has passed away, irritation at the dissimilarity of what they saw with the "eastern fairy tale". Zakharov (Volgograd State University) in her report "Democracy and Human Rights in Modern India through the Eyes of the United States: the delights and disappointments of American Politicians, media and NGOs" He turned to the emotional aspects of modern international politics.
The title of the fourth thematic block "Republic of Offended feelings" refers to the article by I. P. Glushkova "Emotional turn": Hinduism, Islam and other religions in the Republic of "offended feelings" "in the book" Installation and dismantling of the secular space "(Moscow, 2014). In modern India, "insulting feelings" (religious, historical, caste, etc.) and violent reactions to them, including violent actions, have become an integral part of public life, and "offended feelings" are collective in nature, skillfully constructed and used by various political forces and religious communities. Often, society's response to insults inflicted on an individual, especially a woman, is different, as O. P. Vecherina showed in her report "The Anger and Despair of a Rape Victim: The Limits of Mediation in Modern India". Whipping up public passions about the "wrong" reflection of representatives of a particular denomination in the cinema,

A special feature of this conference was the participation of debating scientists, who were specially invited to sum up the results of the scientific session at the end of each day, analyze the most interesting speeches, and express the ideas that arose in the process of understanding what they heard. A. M. Dubyansky, a philologist from the ISAA of Moscow State University, and I. V. Kudryashova, a political scientist from MGIMO, spoke in this capacity at the conference. Belonging to different scientific specializations, using different methodological approaches, they presented a critical analysis of the reports read on the first and second days of the conference, respectively, and evaluated what was revealed and what is still waiting for research.
