The Tradition of Vienna Christmas Concerts: From Court Chapel to the Global Stage Introduction: The City of Music as a Sacred Space Vienna, the historical capital of the Habsburg Empire and one of the world's centers of classical music, has transformed the Christmas concert from a local church ritual into a global cultural phenomenon. This tradition represents a complex blend of religious feeling, court ceremony, commercial success, and a deep collective unconscious connected to the myth of "Vienna as the city of music." Historical Roots: From Liturgy to Secular Genre The origins of the tradition lie in Catholic liturgy. The Christmas mass (Missa, Christmette) always presupposed special musical accompaniment.
