Key stressors activate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, leading to chronically elevated levels of cortisol. Factors causing neurobiological imbalance: Chronic uncertainty and lack of control (the learned helplessness phenomenon) suppress the activity of the prefrontal cortex, responsible for planning and decision-making, and increase the activity of the amygdala, the center of fear. Digital overload and multitasking. Constant shifting of attention exhausts neurotransmitter systems, reducing cognitive functions and increasing irritability. Stanford University research shows that multitaskers are worse at filtering information and demonstrate lower productivity. Social isolation and toxic relationships. Negative social interactions increase the level of inflammatory cytokines in the body, which correlates with the development of depression.
